Many paintings of gaunt moms with kids date from the Blue Period, during which Picasso divided his time between Barcelona and Paris. In his austere use of colour and typically doleful subject matter—prostitutes and beggars are frequent subjects—Picasso was influenced by a visit via Spain and by the suicide of his good friend Carles Casagemas. Starting in autumn of 1901, he painted several posthumous portraits of Casagemas culminating in the gloomy allegorical portray La Vie , now within the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The textual content is organized thematically, however there’s room for chronology to play a bigger position, maybe in individual topics/chapters or with an appendix that can trace again to image examples throughout the textbook. The text covers a broad array of art movements both geographically, and temporally, although I think the non-Western choices are a bit slim. There are numerous mentions of modern/contemporary art, but the authors usually provide links to images rather than embedding them.
